Workshop info

We offer multi-levelled workshops throughout the weekend. Each level gets 5 hours of workshop plus additional open level workshops.

PLEASE NOTE: We do not allow participants to jump between leveled workshops, this means if you are level 3 you cannot attend level 2, 3+, 4 or 5 workshops. This is due to balance of the workshops, space limitations and most importantly respect of the levels.

Please always consult your local dance teacher for which level they think you should apply to. Read the level descriptions carefully before choosing the appropriate group for you. The system will scan all registration to check WSDC levels.
If you want more workshops you can attend our SNOW EXTREME which gives you access to more workshops! Click on Extreme in the menu (under Event info) to read more.

Level 1-2: Newcomer (no WSDC points required)

You are new to West Coast Swing and have just started going to events. You have just learned the basic patterns but want more time and guidance to polish your dance. At this level you will start by practicing and cleaning your basic patterns and learning the basic WCS techniques and how to make the dance look like WCS. By the end of the weekend you might learn some cool variations and basics stylings and how to properly connect to your partner. This level is not only focusing on dance classes but will also teach you about WCS etiquette, how social dancing works, how competition works and how to get the most out of an WCS event.

Level 3: Novice (no WSDC points required)

You have the knowledge of the basics patterns, timing and frame and can dance to most tempos. At this level you will be working on fun patterns, WCS connection, technique and cool variations.

Level 3 will be split in half Group A + Group B to make he grops smaler. Same content just more space to dance!

Level 3+: High Novice (a minimum of 1 WSDC novice point required)

You feel confident with West Coast Swing fundamentals: basic patterns, timing, technique and teamwork. You can social dance with partners from any level without any problem. You want to learn more advanced patterns, musicality, styling and technique. You can audition for this level if you do not have the required WSDC points.

Level 4: Intermediate

This level is open for those in WSDC Intermediate (16 novice points or more). You can also audition for this level if you do not have the required WSDC points.

Open level classes (All levels)

These classes are open for all WCS dancers (full pass or extreme pass), regardless of what level you are attending.

What is WSDC and why do we use it?

World Swing Dance Council (WSDC) is the global organization that tracks results from West Coast Swing competitions around the world. When you compete at WSDC events, you earn points based on your placements. These points place you into divisions like:

  • Newcomer
  • Novice
  • Intermediate
  • Advanced
  • All Star

Think of WSDC as a worldwide skill ranking system.

Why we use it

  • It’s consistent worldwide
  • It helps us group dancers of similar experience
  • It ensures workshops feel challenging but not overwhelming

But… not everyone competes!

And that’s totally okay! That’s why we offer auditions — so everyone gets placed fairly, not just competitors.

How Auditions Work

Auditions are your chance to show your dancing instead of your points.

What happens?

  • You join a short audition session
  • You’ll dance socially in rotating partnerships
  • Music will vary (slow, fast, different styles)
  • Judges (our pro staff) observe you
  • It’s relaxed, friendly, and over quickly!

What Judges Are Looking For

They’re not looking for perfection — they’re looking for fit.

Key things they evaluate:

  1. Timing & Rhythm
  • Are you dancing on beat?
  • Can you adapt to different music?
  1. Connection
  • Clear lead/follow communication
  • Comfortable, responsive partnership
  1. Fundamentals
  • Basic patterns (sugar push, tuck, passes, whip)
  • Balance, posture, control
  1. Technique & Movement
  • Footwork clarity
  • Body movement
  • Control vs. chaos
  1. Adaptability
  • Can you adjust to different partners?
  • Do you stay relaxed under pressure?

What YOU Need to Do

Keep it simple:

  • Dance like you normally would socially
  • Use your basics (don’t try to impress with tricks)
  • Focus on connection and timing
  • Smile and enjoy it
  • The best auditions look like good social dancing, not performances.

Why This System Is Great

Instead of seeing levels as restrictions, think of them as:

  • You’ll be surrounded by dancers at your level
  • Classes will feel just right
  • You’ll progress faster and more confidently

And with:

  • WSDC points → objective measurement
  • Auditions → flexible and inclusive

Everyone gets a fair shot.

So wherever you land: Own your level. Enjoy the journey. And get ready to improve.
